Law of Marketing

10 years ago when I was doing my engineering, I never thought that I will develop such a strong interest and passion in marketing that it will become my life goal to be one of the best digital marketers in India.

I always wanted to do some business and because of that when I started reading books related to business, started watching videos on business and started following top business people, I noticed one very important thing common in all these places. 

What was that common thing? It was marketing. I realized that business books talk a lot about marketing, in videos people are talking about how important marketing is to grow a business.

Even the top business people in the world are great marketers. You talk about Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, or Mukesh Ambani. These business honchos are great marketers as well. 

So in this process, I developed a deep interest in marketing and because I am a technical guy so I am more inclined towards digital marketing. 

From this story, I am just trying to make a simple point that every successful person in this world is doing some kind of marketing. 

Marketing is everywhere. It starts even before the creation of a product and continues even after the product is sold.

You have to market your product or service or yourself (if you are building a personal brand) in every phase of your business cycle. 

So now after reading this short story I think you are somehow convinced that marketing is the most important skill for entrepreneurs. I will talk about it more in later sections of this blog post. 

Now let me explain everything step by step. 

If you are going to start a business then the first step would be to create a product or service. Am I right???

If your answer is yes then you are wrong.

The first step would be to understand the needs of the market. You have to find out the answers to these very important questions:

Who is your target market? 

Who is your ideal customer? 

What are their dreams and desires?

What are their pain points?

What are their needs and wants? 

Once you know the answers to these questions only then you can create a great product or service which is actually required in the market and there are people looking for it.

So this process of finding the answers to these questions is nothing but marketing.

Marketing is not just about reaching out to people, it’s also about putting yourself in their shoes and giving them what they are looking for.

So as I have told you before, marketing comes into the picture even before the creation of the product or service you are going to offer.

If you do your marketing in the right way here, you end up making a great product that will sell by itself. 

A great product sells by itself and needs very less marketing. Word of mouth will be the best form of marketing that works for a great product. 

Branding also plays a very important role in selling your product by itself without the need of doing heavy marketing. 

We will dive deep into the importance of branding later in this post. 

Right now discuss more about Marketing.

So as I have said earlier that marketing begins even before the creation of your product and it stays even after the sale is made. 

So, now I explained its role before the creation of your product. 

Now let’s discuss its role after you have your product ready. 

After you created a product or service now you have to reach out to people to sell your product.

Also, you have to reach the right person. with the right message, at the right time. 

Your marketing skills will help you to do all this stuff. If you know the marketing, you can reach out to the right person, with the right message, at the right time. 

One more thing which is very important here is branding. You have to create a good perception of your product and brand. 

For example, suppose you go to buy a pair of shoes. Now the salesperson shows you one XYZ brand and the other one is PUMA shoes. 

Which one will you choose?

Obviously PUMA because you have a very good perception of PUMA shoes and its brand. 

So creating a brand and reaching out to the people to sell your product, both the things require marketing.

Note: As your brand grows, your need for marketing goes down.

The creation of a brand is a slow process. You grow a brand with the help of consistent marketing campaigns.

You can’t simply avoid marketing and also you cannot outsource it completely. 

This is why the founder of the company should always be a marketer or should have a marketing mindset.

In many cases, traditional marketing also works very well. 

Its importance cannot be neglected completely. 

Suppose you are selling a product that is the product for the masses. 

For example, soap or toothpaste or let’s say a watch. 

For these kinds of products, traditional marketing methods like TV advertisements, radio ads, newspaper ads are also very effective and there is not much need for digital marketing. 

But if your product is not the product of masses. Your product or service is meant for a specific group of people. 

For example, a course on marketing or software for accountants or therapy for those who are in depression.

Your target customers are a specific group of people with some specific problem and you are providing them the solution. 

Now to reach out to them, if you advertise on traditional marketing channels like TV, radio, and newspaper then they are going to cost you on the basis of per impressions. 

The ad will be watched by the masses but your product is useful for a few people in comparison to the audience you are targeting in your ads. 

There is no targeting that you can do in these channels. It’s like burning your own money. You are showing ads to those who actually don’t need your product. 

But with digital marketing, you can find your target audience and target them very well. 

You can show your ads to only those who are actually looking for your product. Precise targeting is a very big advantage of digital marketing. 

So the first advantage of this thing is you are going to save a lot of money in your advertising budget.

The second advantage is analytics. In digital, you can track every single activity as link clicks, time spent on your sales page, traffic, conversion rate, return on ad spends (ROAS), etc. 

There is N number of the matrices that you can track and analyze where you are lacking and how you can improve. 

Also, In digital marketing, you can do the A/B testing with your content or ads which is not the option in traditional marketing. 

So there are a bunch of advantages of using digital marketing for niche-based products.

So, digital marketing is more data-oriented where you can track everything. It also helps you to make better business decisions based on the data you have collected from your marketing campaigns

The ultimate objective of any marketing campaign or any sales funnel is to make the person transact with you. 

We all are looking for more customers in our businesses. More sales means more revenue which means more profits and more money. 

But how to do it? How can you make more and more people do the transaction with you? 

Also, how you can get the repeat customers i.e. the same customer buying from you again & again.

Let me introduce you with a framework that can help you to achieve all these things.

It is known as CATT Funnel for digital marketing.

Here is the formula for it

                           Wealth= n^CATT

Now it’s not some mathematical formula that i am quoting here. You don’t have to do any kind of maths here. 

Let me simplify this formula for you. Just look into each component of this formula one by one. 

                 [n]= Niche. It means your industry or your area of expertise in which you are going               

 to do your business. 

                  [C]= Content that you will create. So content is the center of everything. Without content, you cannot go with this framework or even with any other framework as well. You have to create the content that adds value to your audience’s lives and help them to solve their problems and also educate them about your product or service. 

                  [A]= Attention. After creating content you have to grab the attention of your target audience. You can do it in many ways like by using SEO, Paid ads, social media posts, affiliate traffic, and referrals. All these methods will help you to grab the attention of your target audience and bring the traffic for you to your content. 

              [T]= Trust. This is the time to build trust with your audience. This is the most scarce and most crucial component of this funnel. Without gaining the trust of your audience you cannot make them do the transaction with you. So you do it by regularly nurturing them through your content. You add value, you address their problems, you recommend solutions to those problems, you keep educating them regularly. You can do this by email newsletters, tripwires, marketing automation campaigns, free resources, retargeting ads, etc. This process will help you to build trust with your audience. 

           [T]= Transaction. Finally, you can pitch your offer to them because now you have a long relationship with your audience. You gained their trust. So now you can offer them your product or services and they are going to buy from you very easily. Don’t forget to offer them what they are looking for. If you offer them exactly what they want, they will buy it immediately.

So, by following this funnel you can create the wealth for yourself. You just pick the niche and grow it exponentially by using these four components that we call CATT, which is Content, Attention, Trust, and Transaction. 

Niche Selection

Niche selection is a crucial part of this funnel as without selecting your niche you cannot move forward with the CATT framework. 

So how will you find your niche???

Your niche is the combination of three things. 

  1. Passion
  2. Talent or Knowledge
  3. Market

This picture will explain to you how to find out your niche. The intersection of all three components is the sweet spot where you have your niche.

So first of all you have to find out about your passion. The things you love to do and you can do it without feeling exhausted. 

Now, check your knowledge. Do you have enough talent or knowledge in that thing so that you can write about it or you can educate others about it? 

If the answer is yes, then move on to the next step.

In this step, look for the market demand. 

Are people searching for that thing? 

Do people really want to know more or learn about that thing that you have selected for your niche? 

You can use the tools like 

  • Google Trends
  • Google Keyword Planner,
  • Quora etc

So, if your selected topic fits into all the three criteria then you have found your niche. You can go with it and make it your niche. 

Pro Tip
One important point here is don’t waste too much time on niche selection. You can change the niche anytime in the future.

Find anything which fits into all the three components and just go with it.
